National Park Service Proposes Tripling Individual Entrance Fee For Shenandoah National Park

The National Park Services has announced it is considering increasing fees at Shenandoah and some of the other most highly visited national parks in the country, including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, and the Grand Canyon. The Park Service announced the proposal on Tuesday.

The rate increases would be applied during the busiest contiguous five-month period at each park, which, for Shenandoah, runs from June 1 to October 31. During that time, a seven-day vehicle pass for the park would cost $70, nearly three times its current cost of $25. The entrance fee for motorcycles would go from $20 to $50.

The price increase is the most drastic for individuals entering the park as part of a church or school group, by bicycle, or on a bus. Their fee would jump threefold, from $10 to $30.

Shenandoah National Park was established in 1935. Last year, it attracted 1.4 million visitors who spent $96.2 million. The Park is home to 236 miles of roads, including the scenic Skyline Drive, and 516 miles of hiking trails.

In its announcement, the Park Service said the rate hike “will generate badly needed revenue for improvements to the aging infrastructure of national parks.” According to Washingtonian, 4/5ths of the revenue generated by the increased rates would stay inside the park where the fee was paid, with the other 1/5th going towards a general fund to support maintenance in parks across the U.S. Of the 417 national parks sites in the country, only 118 charge an entrance fee.

The announcement was assailed by advocates for the parks, including the National Parks Conservation Association. “We should not increase fees to such a degree as to make these places – protected for all Americans to experience – unaffordable for some families to visit,” the organization’s President and CEO Theresa Pierno said in a statement. “The solution to our parks’ repair needs cannot and should not be largely shouldered by its visitors.”

Attendance at national parks has grown consecutively over the past three years. Last year, the national parks attracted a record-breaking 331 million visits – a 7.7 increase over 2015.

On Tuesday, the Park Service opened up the proposal to public comment. If you want to weigh in, you can submit your comments on the National Park Service’s website through Nov. 23.
